From Start-up to Smart-up

The Israeli Experience with Hi-tech Entrepreneurship &

Venture Capital as International Leverage

By Eliezer Manor

(available in English & Hebrew)

This book represents an attempt of the author to identify the stepping stones in the dramatic transitional process of the Israeli economy,

since the establishment of the state of Israel, only about 7 decades ago, from a traditional one to a hi-tech oriented one.
The messages in the book are presented in a very short and concise way, accompanied by many illustrations, for a smooth and efficient communication with the reader.

The following aspects are presented and emphasized:

-The important and critical role played by the government of Israel and the initiation and acceleration of the entire process and the nature of related policies elaborated and adopted, Dedicated to encourage a hi-tech entrepreneurial character and behavior of the young generation. Thanks to these policies and mechanisms, Israel was successful in a relatively very short period of time to capitalize on the most important national resource any country in the world is blessed with – the human capital.
-The lessons which might be learned, from this short but intensive experience, are presented and emphasized with a special attention and focus on the standpoint of the hi-tech entrepreneur.
-Indication of possible ways for Israel, which learned in the past from the American example in entrepreneurship, Hi-Tech and Venture Capital, to constitute now by itself the leverage for the creation of cross – national force multipliers, in the Global Village, to elaborate, establish and operate appropriate tools for its next development step. The example presented related to capitalization on the complementary values of Israel and China, is just a way to indicate possible directions and actions for Israel to be taken, in order to make the next transition.
-The content in this book is based on a series of lectures given by the author during the years.

The Little Innovator is about a perceptive and inquisitive little boy who never ceases to ask questions of himself and others. He is not a boy who is trying to be especially clever or cunning, but a boy who carefully observes his surroundings and thinks in an original way.

The story serves as a moral for children, parents and teachers alike.  It teaches that one should never accept the obvious and that “thinking outside the box” should never be discouraged, criticized or – even worse – punished. Indeed, “thinking outside the box” and ingenuity should be admired and encouraged, as these are the traits of the entrepreneur and the innovator.

This story has another important message for adults, too: make the time and effort to hear the clever, original things that children have to say! Do not simply expect and demand the rote answers that they have been taught by parents, teachers, educators, and other adults. Listen to – even encourage – unanticipated responses! Try to understand the thinking behind those responses. Today’s “smart alecks” can become tomorrow’s innovators!

This book illustrates the difference between “teaching” and “educating” children. We adults must encourage patterns of creative thinking. This is not a structured process that can be taught. Rather, it is a talent that must be developed through an educative process that provides the degrees of freedom necessary to allow an unlimited and unbounded imagination to soar.
